Wild River Park, Prishtina

Together with BOOM Landscape and in close collaboration with the Municipality of Pristina, we are using nature-based solutions to address the problem of flooding in Kosovo's capital. The project focuses on an 11-hectare brownfield site on the northern edge of Pristina. This is where the Pristina River flows, the only visible section within the city before disappearing underground. Until the late 1940s, Pristina lay between two rivers: the Vellusha and the Pristina. Between the 1950s and 1970s, these rivers were filled in, and by the 1980s, there were no visible rivers left in Pristina. This site is the last remaining open section—a rare glimpse into the city's natural heritage.

Today, the area faces challenges such as illegal dumping, flooding, and a lack of public spaces and infrastructure. Our task was to assist the city administration in
defining the project scope, developing a master plan concept, and assessing feasibility.

Our vision? To transform this neglected area into the Wild Botanical River Park—a
resilient, multifunctional landscape that restores natural water flow,
reduces flood risk, and revitalizes biodiversity. A new diversion channel will
channel clean water through the park, supported by wetlands and native plants that will filter runoff and improve water quality. This project not only serves flood protection but also reconnects Prishtina with nature. It creates a green-blue corridor connecting neighborhoods and provides space for relaxation and exploration.

The park is a living laboratory where native plants are used to purify the air, water, and soil, while also promoting research and education. Wild River Park creates a living
ecological gateway—a bold step toward a greener, healthier, and more resilient Prishtina.
