Redesigning Scheelen- + Osterstraße

The Scheelen- and Osterstraße are some of the oldest trade routes in Hildesheim and form the backbone of the quarter S'O - the largest of the six inner-city neighbourhoods. A large amount of owner-led specialty-shops and family businesses give the area a special charm and character, which currently is not perceivable within the public realm. Through a participating process a vision and a design concept for the public realm were developed. Short-, mid- and long-term conversion elements allow for a step by step development with the main targets: "Clean Up! Network! Generate Identity!" The first step saw the public realm being cleaned by the demolition of 170 concrete bollards. The existing planters were cleaned and newly planted. As identity generators seating elements and bike stands were installed, which are labelled with the S'O logo.
