Learning differently.
Which spaces make it fun to learn?

Everyone learns differently. A diversity of spaces promotes different types of learning. Such educational "landscapes" activate people and create curiosity. Synergies can be generated by a multi-functional use of spaces and an opening up to its surroundings.

  • Gymnasium Lutherschule

The draft envisages an extension of the Lutherschule through a powerful and independent structure, which fits into the existing block structure and self-confidently positions itself to the Engelbosteler Damm.
The five-storey building forms in a modern and contemporary architectural language a clearly perceptible address, while radiating openness and transparency. At the same time, the indented ground floor facade with its striking brick arches creates a spacious and covered entrance area.
The central organizational idea is the clustering and self-evident stacking of the different areas of use:
The communal areas are located on the ground floor, the creative areas on the 1st floor, the natural sciences on the 2nd floor and the grade clusters on the two upper floors. As in the floors below, the classrooms are grouped around a central communication zone that creates additional learning venues with niches and open areas.

  • Neue Schule Wolfsburg

The existing buildings of the former Hermann-Löns-School in Wolfsburg will be expanded to include a new building for the secondary school. The new building will be connected by an existing corridor. The aim of the design is not only a respectful treatment of the existing architecture, but also its logical and consistent continuation. The comb-like structure of the existing school building is continued on ground floor to the north. The space in-between can be seen as the "common center" or the "heart" of the school: a three-storey open space. This main gathering place connects all floors vertically and correlates them spatially. At the same time, the building opens up horizontally: Generous glass surfaces and entrance situations open up the ground floor to the city in the north and to the school yard and park landscape of Klieversbergs in the south. Like that fluid transitions between inside and outside are created.

  • District school Mitte Altona

Instead of a clean functional construction, a building with an innovative room offer in a special atmosphere for contemporary teaching and learning methods and a space for neighbourly encounters is drafted. The design positiones itself to this role via a self-confident gesture and is with it's cubage purposely set apart from surrounding structures. The usage becomes readable, the differenziation between housing developments and the district schools public building structure recognizable. Thus the new building contributes to the urban surroundings structuring. The cubage reflects the inner organization: the public, also by residents and society used base connects the district with the school building. The transparent horizontal 'fugue' that includes the gym subdivides the building in a base for the common use and the clear educational areas, which 'floats' as self-contained volume above the 'fugue'. A central, light-flooded hall generates the school's common middel, which connects all floors and functional areas up to the roof top terrace. A visible and readable place for education is drafted and forms the Heart of the new district.

  • Vocational College of Machinery and Irrigation - VCMI (Vietnam)

The design of the VCMI campus is based on sustainable principles in order to handle climate and urban challenges the area is exposed to. The masterplan aims for a clear functional zoning which allows future growth. The area reserved for sports can provide a diverse offer, as an educational complement for the students, but also space, passive to be rented, so the school can reinforce economical sustainability. The proposed area dedicated to teaching and training will allow VCMI to multiply its current offer. The Campus is organized around a cooling pond which is the centre of the water treatment concept: Collected rain water can be extracted for the use of grey water in the buildings. Complementing the new expansion is also forecast a Centre of Excellence for Green TVET, an institution that is inscribed in the scope of the Vietnamese-German Financial Cooperation. The junction of these two institutions will trigger synergy effects, unlocking the campus true potential, towards the aim of establishing themselves as one of the forefront regional institutions, but also contribute needed tools, to a resilient climate change in Vietnam.

  • Primary and Comprehensive School Helios

A new primary and comprehensive school (IUS) is planned for the former site of the Helios AG in Cologne Ehrenfeld. The school concept is based on the idea of a "university school", which spatially implements the educational objectives of inclusiveness: The school comprises the grades 1 to 13 and operates closely with the teacher training of the University of Cologne. This is architecturally reflected in an open learning environment for all grades. As part of a new high-quality and dense city block, the school should be an integral part and actor of the district: The school premises may be used publicly and the school offers a range of activities to the neighborhood.
The school is designed as a compact structure, which is confidently positioned due to its clear-cut cubic form and at the same time contextualized by its orientation to axes and edges of the surroundings. It creates a clear address to the Vogelsanger Straße by a glass-enclosed foyer and a funnel-shaped, covered entrance situation. The inviting foyer and the localization of semi-public functions on the ground floor – such as the auditorium and educational center, the canteen, workshop and studio spaces – creates the desired integration of the school into the district and allows for important synergies of different usages.
The common center - "the heart of the school" - spans over two floors and offers spacious stairs for meeting and seating: A great place for communication and leisure for all functional areas of the whole school.

Excerpt from the jury report: "The jury praised in particular the optimal implementation of the educational objectives, which corresponds in a particular way to the intentions of the users. The learning environments are well designed and can be effectively used. Primary education is accessible as a separate unit on the first floor over short distances. The secondary education units I and II are localized on one level and are equipped with a spacious central communication zone, which provides space for a diverse range of activities. ..."

  • SAVI Guggenheim Helsinki

The Guggenheim will access the richness of Nordic culture and open a door towards the East of Europe. Helsinki gets the opportunity to integrate a site with landmark potentials into the heart of the City: Reachable for pedestrians from Eteläesplanadi, adjacent to Tahititornin Vuori Park, and neighboring Olympia Terminal, the site will be a new Connecter within the city. The urban design introduces a plinth to meet the challenges and foster the potentials of the site: It connects the park with the water front via a pedestrian bridge crossing Laivasillankatu. Pedestrians from Eteläesplanadi are directed towards the site via a stage and a grand ramp with seating – here the exhibition begins! A civic space of great quality for tourists and residents to gather and socialize. At the same time the plinth covers the port vehicles access, ensuring undisturbed port operations. Above the Plinth and the Forum "flys" a wooden box. Its height fits into the surroundings and allows great views. The slim shape and horizontal gesture enhances the characteristic of the site at the water front: a subtle yet genuine new element of Helsinki's cityscape.

  • Campus Callosum - Network knowledge

New ideas and insights are created above all through diverse and interdisciplinary work and learning. Chance plays just as important a role as a well-planned procedure. But the new campus offers a variety of places: The compactly organized institutes and departments offer intensive learning and working situations. The public space allows informal meetings and promotes communication between students, teachers and citizens. Just like the Corpus Callosum, which connects the two hemispheres of the brain and thus allows the full power of the brain to develop, the Campus Callosum connects the institutes and departments as well as the library and cafeteria. Here are clearly visible and accessible learning worlds, presentation, exhibition, conference and meeting rooms.

  • CLG Training Institute

The aim of the masterplan for the Chalimbana Local Government Training Institute is to increase the quality of life of both students and academic staff of the Institute, to structure the campus for the long term and to gives a clear identity to individual places. The main orientation of all buildings is strictly east-west with the main façades (north & south) avoiding low-standing sun. Access to the campus by car remains on the existing road. A new main datum for pedestrian connection is established to form the heart of the campus. It spans between the mostly residential area in the north and the educational program in the south. The clusters of housing and education at the two opposite ends of the campus are surrounded by the lecturers houses, and leisure activities. Small neighbourhoods are formed by connecting some strips at the eastern end; the western buildings remain as strips and create courtyards by providing a terrace edge.

  • Moscow New National Center for Contemporary Arts

The design for the new NCCA is composed as a cluster of fragmented volumes. The exhibition spaces are organized to combine maximum flexibility with inspiring spatial situations, which are based on historic paths of desire, those personal short-cuts and crossings one takes to arrive at a destination. Similar to the process of art making, these "desired paths" echo the creative process, offering cross-reference and thinking outside the box. Diverting from the logic of desired paths, and simultaneously highlighting it's off the beaten path logic, the basic setup of volumes and spaces is a clear rigid structure with maximum spans to allow flexible and functional subdivisions. The proposed volumes frame several public spaces between them, while maintaining an intimate relation to the park. Other functions of the park, such as sport fields, special gardens or café's become aligned to the master grid. By incorporating all local traffic – such as the visitors to the mall – the museum square becomes a mix-device, where the Art Centers blurs the lines between art, labor, pastime and commerce.

  • Steinway Museum

In 14-month planning and realisation stage a baroque hunting castle in Seesen was redeveloped with a focus on simplicity and clarity at a reasonable price. Also the permanent exhibition of the museum was conceived and moved.
Central attention at the rebuilding work was the restoration of spatial relations and structures, as well as the creation of a high-quality, modern but timeless showroom, which is able to take on the various exhibits, including specialties such as 'The world's longest piano-string'. The exhibition has a modern pedagocial approach and offers attractions and information for all age groups. Additionally, value was placed to increase children participation through experimental- and multimedia stations. In this way the museum can be accessed by a variety of senses, understanding through seeing, hearing and touching.
